Club HistoryIn 1995, when the SPGG Toastmasters (Charter No 9167-51P) lost the support from its sponsoring body, there remained a certain enthusiasm to find a similar avenue for its members to continue speech training. As the Vice-President for Education, I approached both Members of Parliament for Yuhua, Mdm Yu-Foo Yee Shoon and for Chua Chu Kang, Assoc Prof Low Seow Chay, to consider starting a Toastmasters Club in either of the Community Clubs (CC).
The Management Committee of Yuhua CC did not seem as enthusiastic as the Management Committee of Chua Chu Kang CC. On the other hand, the MP for Chua Chu Kang had been trying to attract more English-speaking constituents to the Chua Chu Kang CC. The Senior Manager of Chua Chu Kang CC, Mr Cha Boon Khew, had also thrown his support behind the formation of an English-speaking Toastmasters Club. As a result, 18 members of the SPGG Toastmasters Club agreed to become Charter Members of the Chua Chu Kang CC Toastmasters Club and we were formally chartered on 1 Sep 1995 (Charter No 7702-51).
In the first few years of our existence in Chua Chu Kang CC, we experienced a gradual attrition of our Charter Members. With the few remaining members, we were stretched in terms of our ability to field sufficient speakers and appointment holders at each monthly Club meeting. We even resorted to having club members hold dual appointments during our monthly Club meetings. Nevertheless, with support from our Sponsoring Club, SIM II Toastmasters Club, we persevered.
The initial years of distributing hand bills, mail box advertisements and tying banners at strategic spots in the dead of night have finally paid off. The various Executive Council members that have served through the years since 1995 have made significant contributions to what the Club is today. I am grateful to all of them and I salute them!
